Sterling Silver is defined as 925 parts per 1000 or 92.5% Silver with the
balance being copper - hence it is also known as 925 Silver and generally stamped 925 or .925. It is regarded
as a semi-precious metal and used extensively in jewellery making. Pure Silver is regarded as being generally
too soft for making jewellery so the addition of copper increases its tensile strength making it more malleable
for forming pieces of jewellery. Antique cutlery was also made from Sterling Silver
(hence the name Silver Service) and was often hallmarked. From about the early part of the 2oth
Century Nickel Silver (aka German Silver) has been used for 'Silver Cutlery' - Nickel Silver, or German Silver,
is not Silver at all - it is a Nickel alloy and resembles silver in appearance and is considerably cheaper than
silver hence its popularity.
